President Donald Trump:

I am aware of your latest position in relation to Mexico. To be clear, I wish to express that I do not desire confrontation. The peoples and nations that we represent deserve that, in case of conflict in our diplomatic relations -no matter the magnitude- we resort to dialogue and we act carefully and responsibly.

The best president of Mexico, Benito Juarez, maintained excellent relations with the republican hero Abraham Lincoln. Later, during the oil expropriation, the democratic President Franklin D. Roosevelt understood the profound reasons behind President -and patriot- Lazaro Cardenas´ actions to protect our sovereignty. By the way, president Roosevelt was a titan of liberty. The first to proclaim the four fundamental freedoms: of speech, of worship, from want, and from fear.

These serve as the cornerstone of our policy on migration. Humans beings do not leave their homes for pleasure, but for necessity. It is why, from the beginning of my administration, I proposed to you that we cooperate in helping and developing Central American nations with productive investments to create jobs and solve this crisis.

You well know that we are fulfilling our responsibility, within legal boundaries and mindful of human rights, to stop migrants from reaching the northern border. I too wish to remind you that in a short span of time, Mexicans will not need to turn to the United States, and that migration will be optional, not obligatory. We are fighting corruption -Mexico´s biggest problem- like never before! As such, our country will become a social power. Our countrymen will be able to work and be happy where they were born, where their families are, their costumes and cultures.

President Trump: Social issues are not resolved with taxes or coercive tactics. How will you all of a sudden turn the country of solidarity to the migrants of the world to a ghetto, a closed space, where those seeking -with effort, and hard work- to be free from want are stigmatized, mistreated, persecuted, expelled, and deprived of justice? The Statue of Liberty is not an empty symbol.

With all due respect, and respecting your sovereignty to say it, the motto “America first” is a fallacy because until the end of time, beyond any national boundaries, justice, and solidarity prevail.

Specifically, mister President: I propose that we deepen dialogue, that we search for wholesome alternatives to the migrant crisis and, please, remember that I am not lacking in valour, that I am not a coward or timid, but that I act by principle: I believe in the policies that, among other things, were invented to avoid confrontation and war. I do not believe in lex talionis, or in “eye for an eye”, because if we did believe in them, we’d wind up blind. I believe that we statesmen, and to a bigger extent men of Nation, are obligated to find peaceful solutions to controversies, and to try and carry out the beautiful dream of non violence.

Lastly, I propose that you instruct your staff -if it is not inconvenient- to attend a meeting with members of our government, headed by Mexico’s Secretary of Foreign Relations, who will arrive in Washington D.C. tomorrow, so that we can reach an agreement that is beneficial to both nations.

It could be a couple of paragraphs shorter, and less aggressive. Otherwise it’s a sobering letter, and one that shows a mastery of language and politics that I never saw so clearly in Obrador before.

trumpy himself has said he doesn’t do fair deals, he does deals that favour him. Obrador said all the right things.

80% of our foreign trade is with the US, the possibility of tariffs rising to 25% by October is chilling.

We already have a hard fought replacement for NAFTA ready to be signed, and it was made with help from Trump, so he wants it to go live.

More than being a punchbag, I think there are better ways of confronting Trump, writing a letter discrediting his political ideology, and calling for massive foreign aid investments will only madden someone as unstable as Trump.

Tariffs imposed by trumpy elsewhere have already had a negative impact on the U.S. manufacturing.

This letter was not for just trumpy but for everyone to see. He’s asserting himself that he wants business but also means business.

The tariffs are likely anyway. There is no way Mexico can guarantee what trumpy is wanting, he knows that. trumpy is trying to show his dominance which may work for his party and it’ll come to a point where everyone just says, ‘screw you’.  

The worlds economy is a fine balance of losing here and making up there. S tart upsetting the balance the way trumpy has, it has consequences.
